Prioritising Renewable Hydrogen End-Uses: A Merit-Order Framework

Albin KasserMaryam SadighiPublicationsResearch areaResearch FellowsSectoral PoliciesWorking papersComments Off on Prioritising Renewable Hydrogen End-Uses: A Merit-Order Framework

Renewable hydrogen remains costly and its availability is constrained. Only 10% of planned global clean hydrogen capacity for 2030 has identified buyers. This raises the question of which end-use sectors should be prioritised as deployment progresses. The paper examines how learning subsidies, targeted demand-side support and production incentives linked to end-use commitments can improve hydrogen allocation.

Closing the Emission Gap: EU CO2 Standards and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) occupy a particular position in European CO2 regulation. Their certified emissions depend on a regulatory Utility Factor, which determines the assumed share of driving performed in electric mode. Evidence from real-world driving has shown that this share was substantially overestimated, leading European regulators to revise the UF from 2025 onward. This reform changes the compliance role of PHEV for car manufacturers facing the EU emission standards. This paper quantifies the market, environmental and welfare consequences of this reform.

Technology Neutrality vs. Policy Discrimination: Optimal Policy Design for Competing Green Technologies

The deployment of clean technologies in hard-to-abate sectors is often hindered by high costs and investment risks. Carbon Contracts for Difference (CCfDs) have emerged to mitigate these risks, yet their design raises a central question: should support for competing clean technologies be technology-neutral or technology-specific?

Climate management practices and market valuation: The price of (in)credibility

This study explores to what extent the implementation of managerial Climate Management Practices (CMP) adopted by large publicly traded firms is associated with Corporate Financial Performance (CFP), measured by Tobin’s Q. The results show that most CMP are not significantly linked to Tobin’s Q, implying that markets largely view them as neutral with respect to value creation. These findings offer practical insights for managers, investors, and regulators, highlighting how climate management practices can be structured to better align with evolving market expectations.

The inequality-emission dilemma : Predistribution vs. redistribution

Macro-economical and societal challengesPublicationsPublicationsResearch areaResearch FellowsTobias AngelComments Off on The inequality-emission dilemma : Predistribution vs. redistribution

This study investigates the relationship between distinct types of inequality and CO2 emissions using panel data on 156 countries from 1995 to 2020. These findings call for international cooperation and public policies aimed at a more equitable primary income distribution to achieve joint inequality and reduction of carbon emissions.

Wealth Inequality Reduction as a Climate Change Policy? Evidence on Political Channels

Macro-economical and societal challengesPublicationsResearch areaResearch FellowsTobias AngelWorking papersComments Off on Wealth Inequality Reduction as a Climate Change Policy? Evidence on Political Channels

Using a two-stage least squares estimator for a panel of 165 countries from 2000 to 2023, the paper shows that lower wealth inequality decreases land use change emissions. The effect is most pronounced when inequality is measured by the top 10% wealth share and in developing countries, where land use change emissions constitute the majority of total emissions.

Disentangling what Drives Global Urea Price: Short-Run and Long-Run Effects

Emma SkalskiPublicationsResearch areaResearch FellowsSectoral PoliciesWorking papersComments Off on Disentangling what Drives Global Urea Price: Short-Run and Long-Run Effects

The concurrent surge in fuel, food, and fertilizer prices underscores the broad vulnerability of agrifood system in an interconnected global economy, where supply chain disruptions can propagate rapidly. It also highlights the urgent need for a deeper understanding of the short-and long-term drivers of the price of the world’s most widely used nitrogen fertilizer: urea. To address this knowledge gap, our study employs a Vector Error Correction Model using global monthly data from 1985 to 2023.
